BDS Round 5 Bike Park Wales - Marc and Kade take the Overall Series Wins. It was a fine weekend for the last round of the Shimano British Downhill Series. Bike Park Wales had done a great job with the track and spirits were high in the GT Factory Racing pits as well as in the enthusiastic crowd. With Gee and Rachel Atherton sitting this one out after a heavy couple of weeks it was left to Marc Beaumont, Taylor Vernon and Atherton Academy rider Kade Edwards to fly the flag– and how they flew! The BPW track had loads of fun features and the team were enjoying themselves which translated into strong results. Kade and Taylor both seeded first with Marc seeding 4th with plenty in the tank for Finals. In his race run Kade was riding really well, he was faster at the split (4.369 up) clean through the final jump section, then at the straight before the final corner, he hucked off the fire-road crossing, got a bit out of shape on landing, almost held it but eventually went down, he got straight back up, round the corner and over the line into 1st just 0.282 ahead of Luke Birkett in 2nd. Kade said “That was a bit close! I nearly threw it away at the end. So stoked to take 5 wins out of 5 (and win my bet with BDS commentator Toby!) It’s been an awesome year, being on the Atherton Academy has been perfect, I can’t thank all the guys enough for their help. Bring on next year!” Taylor was up next, last man on the mountain having seeded first with 2:39.905 - 3 seconds clear of the field. 4th seed Neil Stewart was in the hotseat with a 2:41 – a little short of Tay’s seeding time. Taylor put in a showcase run to cross the line in 2:37.767 and take the win – and 2nd in the Series. Taylor said “ I had a good run, it was smooth all the way down and I pedaled hard, stoked to take the win here this weekend!” Marc had seeded 4th. He also put in a good clean run to cross the line and take the hotseat – but not for long. 3rd seed Joe Smith rode a really powerful bottom section to instantly snatch the lead by 0.87. First and second seeds Matt Simmonds and harry Heath couldn’t match Slugger and Joe for pace and so the series was done. A 2nd for Marc on the day enough to clinch the Overall victory. Marc said “That was an awesome Finals – big thanks to Bike Park Wales and a top crowd – congrats to Joe on the win today, my run was good, a small mistake in the mid section of the course perhaps cost me a little time. 2nd on the day was enough to take the British title and a nice end to the year, proud to be British champion.” Results Men’s Elite 2 Marc Beaumont GT Factory Racing 2:34.357 +0.878 Junior Men 1 Taylor Vernon GT Factory Racing 2:37.767 Juvenile Men 1 Kade Edwards Atherton Academy 2:59.465 Via Atherton Racing Photo's - Laurence Crossman Emms
